Wooden Chess Clock Refinishing — Sanding + Oil/Wax Finish
Choose between an authentic “as-is” vintage clock (20–50–100 years old, with honest wear) or a refreshed, gift-ready look. Our refinishing focuses on the exterior wooden housing: careful cleaning, light/medium sanding, and a durable oil or wax finish that brings out the grain. Matured wood naturally deepens in tone over decades — oil/wax enhances that character.
Also known as a chess timer; this service works on the exterior wood only.
What this service includes
- Assessment, gentle cleaning and masking of openings/windows before sanding.
- Light/medium sanding of exterior wood surfaces only (case, edges, base).
- Hand-applied finish: natural oil or hard wax (satin) — protects and revives color.
- Drying/curing and a short photo report after completion.
This is a woodworking/cabinetry service, not watchmaking.
Clocks we accept
This product covers clocks purchased from our store — we know their construction and finishes. If you want us to refinish your own clock, ship it for evaluation first; we’ll confirm feasibility and price.
Original stamps (e.g., Koopman warranty dates) and distinctive markings are part of history — we avoid removing them unless you explicitly request it.
As-is vs. refreshed — which should you pick?
As-is: keeps patina and all period marks; great for collectors and history lovers. Refreshed: ideal for gifts and display — looks clean and vivid, often “better than new” because oil/wax lets the now-matured wood shine while staying natural.
Not included (separate quote if needed)
- No replacement or fabrication of missing parts.
- We avoid opening the case; we mask holes and glass instead.
- No movement inspection or service (horology work may come later; we already do it for our own pieces).
Timing & practical notes
- Typical turnaround: 7–14 business days (plus shipping), including curing.
- Finish options: Natural oil (warm tone) or hard wax (satin, protective).
- Patina approach: keep as much as possible · balanced refresh · as clean as possible (we confirm by email).
Base engravings look best on a freshly refreshed surface.

Will the color change?
Oil/wax naturally deepens tone and highlights grain. That’s expected and part of the refreshed look. We follow your patina preference.
Do you open the clock case?
We try not to. We mask openings and glass before sanding/finishing. This service focuses on the exterior wooden housing only.
Can you refinish a clock not bought from you?
Possibly. Please send it in for evaluation so we can assess wood condition, access and risk before confirming scope and price.
Will you replace missing parts or service the movement?
No — that’s outside this service and requires a separate quote. Our work here is woodworking/cabinetry.

Returns & Satisfaction
We strive for 100% satisfaction.
As an art workshop, we want you to love your chess set. However, please note the distinction between our products:
- Bespoke & Personalized Items: Because these pieces are crafted specifically to your order (custom size, wood, engraving), they are not eligible for return. They are made exclusively for you.
- Standard Items: Regular products can be returned within 14 days of delivery without giving a reason. In this case, the buyer covers the return shipping costs.

You won’t reach a helpdesk
— you’ll reach me,
FM Michał Fudalej. I design and make each board by hand.
Yes, it’s a small brand. And every story has to start somewhere.
And honestly — I’d be truly glad even if you just say hi.
