This is not just a vintage item. It is a piece of chess history. We believe this could be one of the earliest surviving examples of this model in the world.
The Mystery of the Missing Flags
This HAU (Hamburg-Amerikanische Uhrenfabrik) timepiece presents a fascinating anomaly for collectors. Unlike standard HAU models from the 1920s, this specific clock does not have the "falling flags" (red hands signaling the end of time).
Because the mechanism shows no signs of modification, we suspect this is an extremely early model (pre-1920) or a rare prototype. It represents the era before the "flag" became a standardized feature in tournament play.
Provenance & History
The clock features a historic engraved silver plaque:
Holte Skakklub
1930-1931
2 Pr
"Holte Skakklub" is a Danish chess club. While the plaque dates to 1930/31 (likely when it was awarded as a 2nd Prize), the clock itself is almost certainly older.
Condition Report (Full Disclosure)
This clock is over 100 years old. We believe in full transparency regarding its condition:
- Casing: The solid wood case retains a beautiful, deep patina. However, there is a visible crack on the front wooden panel (clearly shown in the video/photos).
- Components: Two of the base feet are non-original replacements installed by a previous owner.
- Mechanics: The clock is functional – both timers run, and the locking mechanism works. We have decided to leave it in its original, untouched state to preserve its historical integrity.
Usage Recommendation
This is a historical artifact. We strictly advise AGAINST using this clock for regular play. It is intended for display in a serious collection or a study.

Yes, it’s a small brand. And every story has to start somewhere.
