Most entry and mid-range chess boards use thin wood veneer over a plywood or MDF core. This board is cut from solid American walnut and European ash — the same material top to bottom. The contrast between walnut's deep brown grain and ash's pale, clean figure creates a playing surface that reads clearly under any light. The finish is a natural penetrating oil, applied by hand: it feeds the wood rather than sealing it, leaving a surface that feels like wood rather than plastic. As the board ages, the oil can be refreshed with a single application, keeping the surface in playing condition indefinitely.
At 360 × 360 mm with 45 mm squares, this is a Staunton size 3 board — one of the smallest formats still fully suited to serious play. Staunton size 3 is a practical choice for anyone without a dedicated chess table: the board fits a standard shelf, sits comfortably on a coffee table or desk, and can travel without dominating a bag. It is a compact chess board in the literal sense — not scaled down to the point of being fiddly, but genuinely storable and displayable in ordinary living spaces. Ten boards will be made in this run.
